Sen. David Shafer, R-Duluth, picked up two new high-profile endorsements for his lieutenant governor bid from a former U.S. senator and a former U.S. representative in less than a week.
Former Rep. Barry Goldwater Jr. and former Sen. Mack Mattingly offered their support of Shafer. Mattingly was Georgia’s first Republican U.S. senator since Reconstruction, holding that office from 1981-87. Goldwater represented California in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1969-83.
“David Shafer is a Republican stalwart who has worked tirelessly to build our party and elect our candidates,” said Mattingly, who is also a former Georgia Republican Party chairman.
“I am incredibly proud of his leadership in the State Senate, standing up for our conservative values and fighting to pass conservative policies.” Goldwater said, “As a state Senator, David Shafer has fought for lower taxes, less government and more freedom. He is the clear conservative choice for lieutenant governor of Georgia, and I am proud to endorse him.”
